C/S054 LOVE CHANTS SHADOW SEASON 12”

The long-awaited return of Australia’s Love Chants. A super group of sorts, made up of three of the country’s decades-long experimental mainstays: Anthony Guerra (Mysteries of Love, Black Petal label, numerous solo and collaborative projects), Matthew Earle (xNoBBQx, X-Wave, Club Sound Witches, Breakdance the Dawn label), and Michael Zulicki (Mad Nanna, Mole House, Albert’s Basement label). Despite the passage of time, David Keenan’s 2013 words still ring true of the group; a “heartbreaking idiot avant at some kind of a-formal peak.”

Love Chants music is nearly impossible to categorize. Plodding, slow motion, single chord guitar lines create a steady mood, like oars rising and diving back into the sea. While minimalist leads and melodies help us to drift off into a vast ocean. Guerra’s exhaled-more-than-sung vocals provide the soft moonlight reflecting off the gentle, rolling waves. While freewheeling, almost reckless drums create their own nearly separate trip, but somehow still managing to guide the skiff on its journey back home.

The band’s first vinyl release since 2013, Shadow Season continues in their tradition of releasing 12” EPs (their third to date). On this release listeners will find two versions of the title track, separated by the sublime “Sky.” Ultimately though, the record can be heard as a single song with its peaks and valleys proclaiming themselves so effortlessly from one moment to the next, from one track to the next, from take to the next.

Limited to 200 hand-stamped copies. Co-released with Black Petal & Grapefruit.
